The Tokyo International Anime Fair 2008, the world's largest anime exhibition, will be held over four days from March 27 to March 30, 2008 at Tokyo Big Sight.
The exhibition features a trade fair, with booths run by anime - related companies; events, including spectacular stage performances and movie theater showings / displays; and the Tokyo Anime Awards, which will honor outstanding anime works. Last year a record 107,713 people visited the fair over four days. Even if you are not an anime fan, you might be curious to find out just how popular the anime fair is.

Anime is an important part of Japanese pop culture. Specifically, it is said to be representative of "otaku" culture; a unique lifestyle centered on technology and an obsession for Anime/Manga. Akihabara, a famous electronics shopping district in Tokyo, is thought to best represent otaku culture and its peculiarities; it also lends its name to labels such as "Akiba-kei" or "Akiba-type".

Otaku AnimeFor those who are interested in finding out more about anime/otaku culture, the OTAKU-ANIME Adventure Program is for you. After all, the best way to understand this culture is to actually see it for yourself. The tour takes in the Tokyo International Anime Fair and a visit to major otaku spots in Akihabara, including a Maid Cafe (cosplay restaurant). It also includes a stop at the Pocket Monster Center, the Ghibli Museum (featuring the world renowned anime work of Studio Ghibli), and a Manga Cafe. Even anime fans would be surprised with the program's lineup!

AsakusaToo much anime for you? Don't worry, the tour also swings by major tourist spots in Tokyo, such as the Asakusa Shopping Arcade, which are not known for anime / otaku culture.

For anime fans, potential fans, and those who are just curious, joining the program and visiting the Tokyo International Anime Fair is a fun way to experience a unique part of Japanese culture!

*wlupun aku bkn die hard fan anime tp aku sokong jika event besar-besaran cam ni diadakn di Malaysia malah lebih meriah jika pergi bersama2 kuarga tersyg, sahabat handai dan org yg istimewa... don't u think so?...hahaha laugh.gif *

Dragon Ball Movie to Film This Year for 2008 Release

Final Destination's James Wong to direct Justin Chatwin (Goku)

Twentieth Century Fox has officially announced that it signed director James Wong (Final Destination, X-Files television series, The One) and casted twenty-five-year-old Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds, The Invisible, Lost television series) in the lead role of Goku for the movie adaptation of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball action manga. According to the Variety newspaper, filming is set to begin this month, and the film is slated to open worldwide on August 15, 2008. James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Spike, Smallville's Brainiac) will play the antagonist Piccolo, and Stephen Chow, of Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer fame, is producing the project.

Wong will not only direct the film, but he also rewrote an earlier script that was submitted by Ben Ramsey (The Big Hit). According to The Hollywood Reporter newspaper, the story centers around the alien Goku as an adult as he protects Earth — the very planet he was sent to destroy. Chatwin is training under the stunt firm 87Eleven (The Matrix, The Bourne Supremacy, 300). Other roles are still being casted. Previous reports have indicated that shooting will take place near Montreal, Canada and in Mexico, and that Heroes actor James Kyson Lee is auditioning for the role of Yamcha.

Between 1984 and 1995, Toriyama created 519 installments of the original manga for the publisher Shueisha and its Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The manga's 42 compiled volumes have sold over 150 million copies in Japan and over 300 million copies worldwide. Both the manga and its anime adaptations (Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z) have enjoyed success in countries in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. The 17 animated movies in the franchise have been seen a record 49 million times in Japanese theaters. Fox first acquired the live-action film rights to Dragon Ball in 2002.

"Dragonball" to open in Japan next March

Last week, it was announced that the live-action "Dragonball" movie has been delayed. It was originally scheduled to open in theaters worldwide on August 15, but the date has been pushed back to April 3, 2009. However, it was reported today that Japan will end up getting the movie ahead of everyone else, sometime in March 2009.

Doraemon named 'anime ambassador'

Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 07:06 EST

TOKYO The foreign ministry announced Friday it was appointing the cartoon cat Doraemon as the nation's first "anime ambassador," in Japan's latest effort to promote its soft power through its animation industry.

Doraemon or at least a person dressed as the earless, blue-and-white cat will receive his official assignment letter from Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura in a ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, officials said.

The character will appear in films to be shown in Japanese missions overseas, talking about the country's lifestyle and customs.

"By appointing Doraemon, we hope people in other countries will understand Japanese anime better and deepen their interest in Japanese culture," said Yuko Hotta, a foreign ministry official.

Doraemon is the main character in an animation series that is among the most popular in Japan and widely known in much of Asia. The friendly cat travels back to the present from the 22nd century to help out a schoolboy by lending an "anywhere door," which allows people to travel wherever they please.

The government has been trying to turn growing worldwide interest in its anime cartoons, manga comics and cuisine into political capital with a campaign promoting "Cool Japan."
